Interview with Knox McCoy

Interview with Knox McCoy

I had the opportunity to interview* humor blogger extraordinaire, Knox McCoy, of knoxmccoy.com. We discuss humor in the context of Christianity, an idea for how to apologize for our missteps, and the one question he has never been asked. My thanks to Youtube for an awesomely bad screen capture of Knox and I.

Here are the links to the projects that Knox mentioned in his interview:

themybadproject.com

I also asked Knox a series of silly questions, if you want some lighter material. Impressively, he scored an 8/10 in my list of arbitrarily judged series of either/or questions.

Knox, it pains me to hear you say you’d pick Jim Gaffigan over Demetri Martin. Or any comedian over Demetri Martin.

But at least you said you were a Dumbledore guy. Otherwise I don’t know if I could trust your opinions on anything anymore.

I claim ignorance. It’s my only defense.

      • http://lauramcclellan.com Laura McClellan

This has one of my favorite jokes in it…the glass house joke: http://comedians.jokes.com/demetri-martin/videos/demetri-martin—findings

I can also quote several of his jokes on demand if you need any more convincing. :)

        EXAMPLE:
I like rainbows, but I’m not gay.
So when I wear a shirt that has a rainbow on it, underneath it I have to put “not gay.” But I’m not against gay people, so underneath that I have to put “but supportive.”
I just don’t think it’s fair that one group took the entire spectrum of refracted light.

        Ok I’m done.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Demetri is hilarious, I just think Gaffigan is funnier. When I first saw the pie charts etc. I thought it was great, I just think his schtick has a shelf live, whereas Gaffigan is more versatile. Completely subjective, of course.

          • http://lauramcclellan.com Laura McClellan

That’s fair. I haven’t listened to Jim Gaffigan nearly as much as I have Demetri, so I can’t give them an exact comparison. I think I just love the dry/observational humor approach. But yes–totally subjective. One of these days I will win you over with SOMETHING I like/dislike! haha.

It will happen, we’ll just give it time. How do you feel about Boy Meets World?

          • http://lauramcclellan.com Laura McClellan

Is there any other way to feel about BMW other than to love it in every capacity?

I’ve seen every episode about 28 times. :)

            You?

          • http://calebmcnary.com/ Caleb McNary

Yes, yes, 1,000 times yes! I knew we would find something.

          • http://lauramcclellan.com Laura McClellan

FINALLY. phew. I guess we can be friends.

    • http://calebmcnary.com/ Caleb McNary

Laura, first you say you don’t like Happy Endings, then you like Demetri Martin over Gaffigan? I just don’t know what to do about this.

      • http://lauramcclellan.com Laura McClellan

Man. 0 for 2 with Caleb. Well, I stand by both of my preferences. :) Especially Demetri Martin. He’s my favorite, so I’d pick him over any comedian.

Love this interview…I’m a big Knox McCoy fan and I love the humor he brings to the table. Thanks for taking the time to do this Caleb!

      Thanks for stopping by Brandon!

Awesome job, C-mac. Love the idea of going the video route with an interview. You’re a brilliant dude.

    • http://calebmcnary.com/ Caleb McNary

Lots of fun and easy to do, surprisingly easy, actually. I would recommend it.

Great interview! Funny questions–but I feel like you soft-balled Knox a little. Where was the “Steve Harvey or Larry the Cable Guy” question?

Now that I want an answer to.
    ;-)

    • http://calebmcnary.com/ Caleb McNary

I’m lulling Knox into a false sense of security, then when I do another interview with him a ways down the road, I’ll get him good. And the answer to your question is Larry the Cable Guy. All day, every day.

      • http://randomlychad.com Chad Jones

Ok, I’ll grant you that–but not by so great a margin.

Here’s a question from the wayback machine: classic Steve Martin, or classic Richard Pryor?

        • http://calebmcnary.com/ Caleb McNary

Good one! I would have to go with Steve for a couple of reasons: 1) He plays killer banjo and 2) I take subtlety over audacious any day. You?

          • http://randomlychad.com Chad Jones

            Wait, wait, wait!

            Hold on a second–

You said “I take subtlety over audacious any day.”

And yet you picked Larry the Cable Guy over Steve Harvey?

            Does. Not. Compute.
            ;-)

            But I’m with you–classic Steve.

          • http://calebmcnary.com/ Caleb McNary

Wow, I just got owned. I guess I identify with Larry because I live within about 5 miles of the culture he represents. Don’t get me wrong, Harvey is funny, but a little outside of my life experience.

          • http://randomlychad.com Chad Jones

I was just messin’ wit ya. ;-)

Looking forward to watching the video premier of Sir Knox. I expect that at one point he’ll be referred to as the most interesting man in the world. Then he’ll laugh like a cartoon. Yes, this is a preemptive comment.

    • http://calebmcnary.com/ Caleb McNary

A historian leaving a preemptive comment. Interesting!

Great interviews, Caleb! Knox, you were not nearly as awkward as I thought you’d be. :)

Jim Gaffigan vs. Demetri Martin? I could never answer that question. I love them both equally!

    • http://calebmcnary.com/ Caleb McNary

I ask the tough questions that matter, Leigh. I do what I do.

“Tom Bergeron makes me visibly angry.” ~ Knox McCoy

    • http://randomlychad.com Chad Jones

Y’all should’ve seen episode of Castle last season where Tom Bergeron plays a smarmy talk show host. Yes, he was the vic.

That should bring Knox some happiness, right?

      • http://calebmcnary.com/ Caleb McNary

I love Castle, I forgot about that episode! That should pacify Knox somewhat.

        • http://randomlychad.com Chad Jones

Me, too! It’s a show that doesn’t aspire to be anything more than solidly entertaining, and it delivers in spades.

    • http://calebmcnary.com/ Caleb McNary

“I know how I feel about it, but I’m afraid of how I’ll react if you don’t feel the same way.” That was my favorite part of the whole conversation.

  • http://twitter.com/kayriz10 Kristen

Knox loves the Bachelor/ette. We know it. He knows it. :)

    • http://calebmcnary.com/ Caleb McNary

Kristen, you hit the nail on the head. I’m not sure his motives for lying, but he must be scheming about something.
